Initial Thoughts
Please reflect on the following questions:
- How can teachers decrease the negative, disruptive behaviors in the classroom and school?
- How can teachers decrease behavioral interruptions to instruction?
- What can teachers do to effectively manage their classrooms?
- How can teachers create positive classroom environments that encourage positive behavior and protect instructional time?
Behavior & Classroom Management
William Glasser stated in his choice theory that all we do as human beings is engage in chosen behavior and that these chosen behaviors are developed to address five basic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun. It is important acknowledge this foundational research as many students, especially the students identified in School W, revert back to these basic needs and they will be the result of the behaviors they engage in. Additionally, Glasser redirects to the idea that our chosen behavior is made up of four things: acting, thinking, feeling and physiology. The only two items we can directly control are the acting and thinking portions, which in turn can influence and change our feelings and physiology. Rudolf Dreikurs also developed a social discipline model that engages Glasser's ideals as well. Dreikurs also stated that all behavior has a purpose, is orderly and is leading to achieving a specific social goal. Dreikur's behavioral goals are similar to Glasser's five basic needs but are broken down into four motivational factors: attention, power, revenge and helplessness. According to Dreikur's, it is important to recognize these goals in order to understand how to defuse the situations they create and to determine how an educator should react in order to maintain management of a classroom.
This lead us to Harry and Rosemary Wong. The Wongs' focus in the majority of their research is managing behavior of ourselves and students. Through focusing on Glasser's choice theory indirectly and majorly focusing on our own thinking and acting as educators, and Dreikur's social discipline model, we can in turn change the chosen behaviors of our students as a result and hence become Effective Teachers.
Harry and Rosemary Wong have long stated that in order to be an effective teacher, one must follow three habits:
For the purposes of this training and the needs of our school we will be focusing on the first two habits.

Harry and Rosemary Wong have long stated that in order to be an effective teacher, one must follow three habits:
- Exhibit positive expectations for all students.
- Establish good classroom management techniques.
- Design lessons for student mastery.
For the purposes of this training and the needs of our school we will be focusing on the first two habits.
Please complete the poll to the left. What do you think makes a teacher effective in a school? Which do you think is most important in creating a successful learning environment?
