School Demographics & Background
In order to fully understand why this training and professional learning module is being created and implemented, let's look at the most current data at School W that was collected.
School W is a low socio-economic K-5 elementary school in central North Carolina. The entire school recieves Free and Reduced Lunch and receives many donations from local churches, food banks and has a full time social worker. Many of the students live in low income-based housing that is located adjacent to the school. Parental involvement is low at School W and many students are considered to be Latch-Key students.
According to the latest data from Eduators Handbook (2015), behavior and discipline has been an area of need at School W. Through looking at the document, the greatest area of offense is classroom disruptions and defiance with nearly 50% of the issues taking place in the classroom. The Instructonal cost of such behavioral offenses has totaled up to 150.3 days of learning, especially when most months, the school is averaging 1.5 to 1.8 referrals per day. According to the latest North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Initative (2014) nearly three-quarters of the teachers at School W state that students do not follow the rules of conduct at their school as shown in the first row of percentages in the screen shot below. Additionally, less than 75% of teacher state that administrators enforce the rules of conduc and at least 25% of the teachers at WSES state that students at the school do not understand the expectations of their conduct. These percentages of agreement demonstrate vagrant difference as compared to the far right row of percentages, which were documented during the 2012 school year.
Challenge
How can we, as individuals and a team, correct the issues and trends in negative behavior at the school through minimally invasive procedures that will not disrupt structured learning time but instead increase and protect instructional time as well as decrease the negative and disruptive behaviors despite School W's demographics?
